There are three big lies:
1) Of course I love you, baby!
2) We're from the government and we're here to help you.
3) The check is in the mail.
Today's Big Lie falls into category 3. Instead of being a check, the matter is Form 180. John Kerry says "yeah, I signed Form 180 and it's on its way..."
The Big Lie. Kerry is now off the hook for his failure to open and disclose his full military records, because the check is in the mail.

is there any possible reason to care about this anymore? What exactly does one hope to find?

you cared enough to comment.
and remember, he is very public about wanting to run again in 2008.
If it was Bush, wouldn't you fully expect to see a continuous littany of "awol" charges?
Quite a few people think Kerry's record is suspicious. As long as there are lefties out there screaming that Bush was really AWOL and someday we'll find REAL (aka not forged) documents to prove it, why is it wrong to expect Kerry to open up his own military records?

I make no claims to Bush being AWOL in the technical use of the term, but it's clear from released documentation that he failed to fulfill his duties, and was allowed to get away with it.
No one of any repute that I'm aware of finds Kerry's record suspicious.

Then you are in total denial and are completely ignorant, torridjoe!

Sounds like the late Pauline Kael, who said (paraphrasing): How could Richard Nixon have won re-election when no one I know voted for him?
Nixon, of course, won re-election in the biggest landslide in history...
