Trent Lott is retiring. While Lott can certainly be counted as a fairly reliable conservative vote most of the time, he has nonetheless been a real problem for the Party. He is a loose cannon, always putting his own interests before the interests of the Party (and the people). Plus, he is a loud mouthed fool, constantly putting his foot in his mouth to the detriment of conservatism.
I hope Governor Barbour appoints someone young and principled who can serve well for many years to come. However, I'm guessing the appointment will be this young man, which probably means essentially another generation of Trent Lott.
