Yep, I agree. What are you thinking the benefit to him/her is going to be? Levels in a prestige class like Archmage or a powerful item?

My thought is the ability to cast a Wish - ultimate arcane power - which V could use to teleport even though it is a forbidden school of magic.
To cast Wish, V would need to be 17th level. Best guess on level for V now is 14th - able to cast multiple 7th level spells, but not 8th.
The downside to casting a Wish, of course, is loss of XP. So, if they are able to make V 17th level but not any higher, V could cast it once, then be reduced to 16th level - and possibly without the ability to ever go back up (death, etc).
Always read the fine print.
