OK, put the gun down... Just hear me out...
Incumbent Robert Ackerman, Oregon State Representative, District 13, a democRat, is not seeking re-election in 2006. It looks like the most likely candidate to run for his open seat will be former City Councilor and Mayoral Candidate Nancy Nathanson.
Let me tell you how surprised I am: I had no idea until reading this article that Nathanson was a democRat! As a City Councilor, Nathanson was one of the most consistent pro-business, anti-moonbat members of local government. She had the support of retiring Mayor Jim Torrey, a Republican. I really wish she had defeated our resident moonbat Kitty Piercy in the Mayor's race last year. But the City Council and Mayor's office are non-partisan. Nathanson's affiliation with the democRat party wasn't really brought up. So forgive me if I assumed she was a Republican. She certainly leads like one. So I might vote for a democRat, just this once.
Of course, that's might. We don't know who else might be running. But Nathanson is a great person with a base of support. Unless the GOP can find a fantastic candidate, I'd just as soon support Nancy in her bid.
Memo to the Oregon and Lane County GOP: it might be better to try getting Nancy to run as a Republican than to waste time, effort, and resources on trying to recruit and run a challenger!
Well, the late Sen. Scoop Jackson of Washington, a Democrat in the Kennedy/Truman/Zell Miller mold, would probably be a reviled Republican today.
They're not often found as non-senior citizens, and not often outside the Old Confederacy, but should be all the more treasured for it.
Having one party that's completely nuts and one that's on it's way (unpressured by any sane opponent) is not good for the republic.

Gully, Nancy stood out as pro-business against the background of Bonnie Bettman, Betty Taylor and the bearded wonder from Kalifornia. She was always a swing vote and was not always business friendly. There are several good Republicans considering this race. Think back to past candidates in house 13 or senate 7...

Anyone notice that Mannix made his candidacy official? And it's not for Supreme Court.
Guess he wasn't listening to you Gullyborg.
Too bad.

Gully,
You really need to stop the wishfull thinking.
She will not change parties. That kind of thing seldom happens. Which is why it was such a big deal that Tom Cox switched from a libercrat to a Republican.
As for supporting her, I would strongly consider her first vote. The first vote is for speaker of the house. The state was spared an innumerable amount of horrible policies and laws because Karen Minnis (current speaker) is safe and sane.
Also consider this woman's support for the Public Employee Unions (PEU's or Peeuuwws). Remember those guys are really the most evil folks on the planet. I mean the leadership that is. They have in many cases made it illegal for legal people to take part in the democratic process.
So settle down a bit young patawa. Pour yourself a cold beer or a nice stiff drink. In 15 minutes you will be back on the great republican train again. OH, and once back on... Have another drink and I'll join ya!

Well, having learned more about Nathanson, my enthusiasm has lowered a bit. But I still think that, if she is elected, she will be an improvement over the liberal Ackerman. No matter the outcome of the election, we will have progressed. The only question will be "how much?"
So if the GOP can put up a good candidate in this race, count me in.
Beer is good.
Also, I looked into some deadlines... it appears to be too late to even try to lobby Nathanson into running as a Republican this election. But if she is elected, and if in her first term she proves to be more moderate than the rest of her democRat, we should still try to "convert" her before the next election. Or at the very least, do the "reach across the aisle" thing for occasional support.
You have to remember, this district is a pretty safe seat for democRats. Getting a moderate democRat who might be on our side some of the time is better than getting a barking moonbat!
