I saw this on the news last night, and felt compelled to say a thing or two.
Liberal democRats are always going off on "corporate greed" and how they are the party for "the little guy." Well, in Oakland, CA, one of the most liberal of democRat strongholds, the little guy has his successful small business yanked out from under him, while one of the biggest corporate entities in the world is handed all his business, literally across the street.
Fortunately, the majority Republican U.S. Congress is working on preventing abuses such as this. Let's hope they succeed.
Next time you hear a liberal democRat claim to be "for the little guy" and "against corporate greed," punch him in the mouth. Hard.
A small tire seller with a reputation and a strong base of B2B customers can survive if he relocates in the area.
The real crime is the fact that the small business won't be able to replace their real-estate for the "fair market value."
If Oakland is anything like Portland (and I'm sure the bay area is) the cost of remodelling, traffic impact, land-scapping, and paying the various fees for development will price a small business out of relocating.
In the world of Smart Growth only the uber-large and the subsidized can locate in the center of town.
