He says that terrorism isn't as big a threat to America as... our lack of amnesty for illegal aliens.
OK, he didn't exactly use those words, but after reading this twice, I can only conclude that Powell is honestly trying to express the belief that we would be better off dedicating our national resources to granting amnesty to illegals than to fighting terror. I suppose he thinks that the horrific events of six years ago today would have been thwarted, if only we had had a path to citizenship so Mohammed Atta could have come out of the shadows...
I used to respect this man. I used to dream of the day he would decide to run for office. He could have been President simply by announcing he was running. But he's gone off his rocker with this one. At least some people actually get it: be sure to read this column from Mark Steyn; it's the kind of column I wish I had the skill to write.
I, too, was a big fan of Secretary Powell's. I still remember his presentation before the Security Council as one the best, comparing favorably with anything from Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Jeanne Jordan Kirkpatrick. And they were whizzers.
Interestingly, I've heard little comment about Zalmay Khalilzad.
Thanks for the post.

Who do you think it's been that has leaked so much classified information to the press?
The "honorable" Powell.
