By now you have probably already heard about Jeff Maxwell, the WOU student expelled for LAWFULLY carrying a concealed handgun. What you might not have heard is that Oregon War Veterans Association is ready to provide Maxwell with an attorney so the former Marine can sue the crap out of that worthless school.
Now, I certainly applaud this effort. However, I can't help but think it might also be good for folks to raise money not for legal fees, but to help Maxwell pay for tuition at a real school. I am sure Hillsdale would be ready and willing to accept this young patriot...
He sounds like a good fit for Hillsdale!

what chance would a derringer-toting Maxwell stand against well armed 9mm fanatics who are hell bent on a killing spree? His carrying a weapon of any kind just breeds an unrealistic Rambo scenario. The first "Texas Tower" student massacre occurred on campus in Houston, done by an ex-Marine, same in San Diego's McDonalds, Kaleen, TX.

Ah, because he is an armed student and a former Marine, he must be ready to climb a clock tower, eh?
And if you want to know what a derringer can do to an opponent, try asking Jason Atkinson.
Idiot.

Gully,
I don't think that the previous commenters point is that ex-military are necessarily going to commit these sorts of actions, it's that you can't assume that they won't.
And your comment about Jason Atkinson is just silly. Yes, he was injured by a derringer. That doesn't translate AT ALL in those types of weapons being effective against a well-armed assailant.

Do you know anything at all about firearms?
It is not the firearm. It is two things: the ammo, and the ability to put it into your target when necessary.
Believe me, a derringer with appropriate defensive ammo in the hands of someone who is cool under pressure will stop a well-armed assailant.

Gully,
It's certainly possible that someone armed with a derringer might stop a well-armed assailant. They'd likely need some luck, too.
Are there instances you're aware of where someone with a concealed carry permit stopped such a situation, such as the recent shooting in downtown Portland?

Try reading the "Armed Citizen" column in every issue of "American Rifleman."
The majority of successful uses of firearms for self-defense involve a measley .22 rimfire.

The most telling comments by Lewis and "A" are these:
"His carrying a weapon of any kind just breeds an unrealistic Rambo scenario."
I daresay Lewis feels this way about ANY private citizen carrying a weapon.
"it's that you can't assume that they won't."
And therein lies the basis of all modern "Liberal" thought -- you can't assume that people will make the right decisions, so you have to make their decisions for them.
